Obituary of Mother Alberta M. Davis
Alberta Ellerbe Davis, daughter of the late Reverend Gilbert Ellerbe Sr. and Mrs. Lillie Sue Willis Ellerbe, was born on September 24, 1930 in Latta, SC. She quietly departed this life on Wednesday March 23, 2022 at McLeod Hospice in Florence, SC after a long illness.
Alberta attended the public schools in Latta SC. She owned a daycare for over 40 years and help raise numerous generations of children. At an early age she joined Weston Chapel A.M.E. Church and was an active member until her health began to decline.
Alberta was exceptional at numerous activities. She was an avid gardener and preserved or froze everything she harvested. From making jelly from her grapes to making applesauce, and canning pears, Alberta was also a great cook known for her delicious cakes and pies. She sewed and made wonderful quilts. Most evenings you would find her doing puzzles, Sudoku, word search, or just reading a good book. But most of all Alberta was known for her family Christmas Eve celebrations.
She was preceded in death by brothers Gilbert Ellerbe, Jr., Earl Ellerbe, Theodore Ellerbe, Franklin Ellerbe and sisters Jalema Jones, Marie Dekeyser, Mildred Dekeyser, and Lillie Mae Bethea.
She leaves to cherish fond memories ~ one daughter Elizabeth (Thad) Williams of Sellers, SC; two sons Marshall Davis (Trish) of Dillon, SC and Phillip (Emily) Davis of Sellers, SC, and a granddaughter that she raised Kimberly Galloway Cochran of Sellers, SC; along with 11 other grandchildren and a host of greatgrandchildren and great-grandchildren; one sister in law Florean Spears Ellerbe of Sellers, SC; and a very special nephew Stanley Bethea of New York, NY.
Special thanks to McLeod Hospice and staff and Alberta’s caregiver angels Jennifer King, Mary Legette, Theresa Robinson, and Maya Cochran.
